That War May Cease

Suggested Hymns:
O God, Our Help in Ages Past (Hymns 31)
Now Thank We All Our God (Hymns 95)
Father in Heaven (Hymns 133)

Read:
Alma 28:1-6

Discuss:
Memorial Day observances began in the wake of the Civil War, marking a "time of solemnity" much like that described in the Book of Mormon (verse 6). What do we remember on Memorial Day?
Where in the world are people currently suffering the horrors of war?

Read:
"Our mission is to save, not destroy; our aim should be to build up, and not to tear down. Our calling is to convey the spirit of love, truth, peace and good will to mankind throughout all the world; that war may cease; that strife may come to an end, and that peace may prevail." (Joseph F. Smith, Improvement Era, May 1915)

Discuss:
What will it take to make war cease?
What can we do to help "convey the spirit of love, truth, peace, and good will to mankind throughout all the world"?

Activity:
Visit the military section of your local cemetery, if it has one, or find the graves of soldiers killed in war. Read their names; calculate how old they were when they died. Ask family members to try to imagine these individuals: What dreams or hopes might they have had for their lives? How would their deaths have impacted their loved ones?

If the atmosphere allows, offer a family prayer there in the cemetery. Pray for an end to the tragedy of war. Resolve to regularly remember in your family prayers those who currently suffer the horrors of war and to pray that war may cease.

In the spirit of Alma 28:6, you might observe Memorial Day with a special fast for peace.
